Ecological Forecasting Project

Website design + Brand strategy + Illustration

The Ecological forecasting project at virginia tech

What if we could predict ecological functions like we predict the weather? Reliably, rigorously, and with uncertainty quantified.

The Ecological Forecasting Project develops tools that forecast everyday services provided by ecosystems, like water quality, forest production, and more. They develop and deploy environmental sensors, build robust ecological models, and work closely with forecast users to co-create tools that can guide decision-making on human health and well-being.

Their goal is to develop reliable forecasts and intuitive visualizations that protect our communities and advance our understanding of ecosystems.

We had worked with Ecological Forecasting Project Co-Founders Dr. Cayelan Carey and Dr. Quinn Thomas previously on a film highlighting the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) data and its users. Have I mentioned, we LOVE when our clients come back for new collaborations?!?

For this project, our goal was to build a memorable brand and unique visual style for the Ecological Forecasting Project. We wanted to translate that brand into a new website that let their work shine - in order to build visibility, grow their audience, and get the world excited about a whole new future in ecological forecasting.

The brand

bold, technological, exciting

The Ecological Forecasting Project’s brand is bold, technological, and exciting. They believe in team science, transparency, and community. They value co-creation, partnership, and creativity. We wanted to capture their value system with a logo that is bright, bold, and technological.

The arrows in the logo represent the flow of information, natural cycles, and forecasting into the future. The cloud represents both ecological variables and cloud-based data systems. The nodes represented partnerships, teamwork, and also on-the-ground sensor deployment. The logo is designed to represent both what the Ecological Forecasting Project values and what they do.
