Mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and dengue continue to threaten more than two-thirds of the world’s population, killing hundreds of thousands of people each year.

Despite decades of progress, conventional tools are failing as insecticide resistance spreads, drug resistance emerges, and effective vaccines remain elusive. Addressing this global challenge requires new ideas, new technologies, and new ways of approaching translational research.

The George Dimopoulos Group at John Hopkins University studies the molecular and genetic interactions between mosquitoes, the pathogens they transmit, and the microbes that live within them. By uncovering how these systems interact, the team is developing transformative tools to stop disease transmission at its source — from genetically modified mosquitoes to microbial biopesticides and real-time disease surveillance technologies.

When Dr. Dimopoulos partnered with Impact Media Lab, his goal was to create a brand and website that reflected both the cutting-edge research and real-world impact of his work. He wanted a digital presence that showcased his projects, attracted top students and collaborators, and positioned the lab as a global leader in innovative, translational public health research.
