Wild Commons was founded in response to a growing frustration within environmental filmmaking. Every year, extraordinary films are created, celebrated on the festival circuit, and then quietly disappear. Despite the talent, effort, and importance of these stories, the systems responsible for distributing them often leave filmmakers with little visibility, ownership, or long-term support. Wild Commons was created to challenge that model and build something better.

Impact Media Lab partnered with Wild Commons to develop the brand strategy, messaging framework, visual identity, and website from the ground up. Through a collaborative discovery process, we identified a central idea that would guide the entire project: environmental storytelling is more important than ever, yet film distribution has never been more limited.

This insight informed everything from the platform’s positioning and tagline to the website architecture, helping transform a distribution platform into a broader movement centered on filmmakers, audiences, and shared purpose.

The resulting brand gives Wild Commons a distinctive position within the documentary landscape. The website serves as both a streaming destination and a community hub, helping audiences discover meaningful stories while creating greater visibility for the people behind them. More importantly, the project established a foundation for future growth, providing a clear identity for a platform working to create a more equitable, sustainable, and filmmaker-centered future for environmental storytelling.

The brand

powerful
independent
rebellious

With the strategic foundation established, we developed a visual identity designed to embody three core characteristics of Wild Commons: powerful, independent, and rebellious. The platform was built to challenge traditional models of environmental film distribution and create new opportunities for filmmakers to retain ownership, reach audiences, and build lasting impact. The brand needed to feel cinematic and professional while also carrying the spirit of a movement determined to rewrite the rules.

The visual system draws inspiration from contemporary documentary culture, editorial publishing, and independent media. Strong typography and immersive imagery allow the films themselves to take center stage, while a clean, structured layout creates clarity across a growing library of stories. Throughout the experience, we intentionally elevated filmmakers alongside their work, reinforcing the idea that Wild Commons exists not only to distribute films, but to support the people who create them. The visual language was intentionally restrained, allowing photography, film stills, and storytelling to carry the emotional weight of the brand. The identity communicates purpose without feeling institutional and conviction without feeling exclusionary.

The result is a brand that feels equally at home among independent filmmakers, conservation organizations, and curious audiences, creating a digital platform that reflects Wild Commons’ vision for a more collaborative future in environmental storytelling.
