The Nordic Society Oikos is one of the oldest and most respected scientific publishing organizations in ecology, bringing together journals that have advanced our understanding of ecosystems, evolution, and biodiversity for more than 70 years.
As the Society prepared to modernize its digital presence and strengthen its identity across its five journals, Oikos, Ecography, Journal of Avian Biology, Nordic Journal of Botany, and Wildlife Biology, the Society needed a unified visual system that could honor its scientific legacy while supporting a more cohesive, accessible experience for authors, editors, and readers.
Oikos partnered with Impact Media Lab to create a refreshed brand for the Society and a complete logo suite for all five journals, along with a website template that can be scaled across the entire publication family. The goal was ambitious: to create a design system that feels cohesive but still celebrates the distinct voice and community of each publication.
The brand
credibility
clarity
connection
We began with a brand strategy deep dive, exploring the shared mission across the Oikos journals: publishing rigorous, impactful science that connects people and nature. Through collaborative workshops with editors, we identified the key values that unify the brand: credibility, clarity, and connection.
Our design team developed a modular visual system, creating individual logos for each journal that fit within a cohesive Oikos family. Each logo draws inspiration from the subject matter of the journal, presented in a clean, geometric, nordic-inspired style. Our goal was to capture both the precision of the science and elevate the brand with a unique, compelling, memorable visual style.
In parallel, we designed a custom website template system that can be applied to all five journals. Built for flexibility, it allows each site to highlight its own focus area and content flow while maintaining a shared structure that strengthens the Oikos identity. This scalable design ensures future journals and projects can seamlessly join the family without rebuilding from scratch.
