Squirrel Mapper

Website design + Brand strategy

squirrel mapper

Squirrel Mapper is a volunteer-powered, scientific study of rapid color evolution in the gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). With the help of citizen scientists, they study how and why the different color morphs of gray squirrels are evolving across North America. Over the past 10 years, they have built a community of 45,000+ citizen scientists collecting and analyzing squirrel data. Anyone, anywhere with the internet can take part in their research!

For this project, our goal was to help Squirrel Mapper build a new brand and website that captures the excitement of squirrel watching, the accessibility and joy of their research, and their uniquely people-powered approach.

The brand

bold, accessible, fun

The Squirrel Mapper brand is engaging, educational, accessible, and fun. It celebrates the potential for all of us to become scientists and naturalists in our own backyard. The colors and designs for this project were inspired by the huge range in colors of grey squirrels.
