5 Emerging SciComm Trends

In today’s rapidly evolving world, effective science communication (also known as SciComm) is more crucial than ever. Science helps people understand complexity, make decisions, informs policy, so it’s important to get your research out there and have a bigger impact.

But with so much content competing for attention, there is a growing need for innovative methods to engage our audiences and to make intricate scientific concepts accessible to everyone. Embracing new trends in SciComm, therefore, can help not only enhance understanding but also foster a deeper connection between the scientific community and the public.

In this article, we explore five emerging trends—animation, infographics/data visualization, short films, interactive storytelling, and reels—that are transforming the landscape of science communication.

Trend #1 -Animation in SciComm


Animation simplifies complex scientific concepts, transforming abstract ideas into visual narratives that captivate viewers. Attention-grabbing animations can also make science accessible and engaging for diverse audiences.

  • Enhanced Understanding: Animation can break down intricate ideas into simpler, visual forms while telling an engaging narrative, aiding comprehension.

  • Engagement: Effective SciComm through animation can distill the findings of peer-reviewed papers in an accessible way, and can have a greater impact on the general public. Animated content is often more engaging and can better maintain an audience’s attention than static images or text.

  • Flexibility: Animation allows for creative representations of scientific concepts that are difficult to capture with traditional media like photos. This can range from microscopic processes, or visualizations of outer space!

Separations Science and Engineering Center

Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering worked with our team to create animations for the 6 separation techniques that chemical processes rely on. These fun, simple animations clearly demonstrate how each process works within seconds of watching.

Infographics and data visualization condense intricate data into visually appealing and easily digestible formats. They enhance understanding by presenting information clearly and concisely.

  • Clarity: Visual representations simplify complex data and science. Accurate data visualization breaks information down, making findings easier to comprehend and interpret.

Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Data Visualizations: Johns Hopkins University’s dashboard effectively communicated pandemic data globally from 2020 to 2023 by visualizing the data using charts and maps.

Climate Change Infographics by IPCC: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) uses infographics to present climate data and projections. They even make them free to download for non-commercial use as a way to disseminate their infographics and have a greater impact through further reach.

Short films can help get your scientific message heard. At Impact Media Lab, we collaborated with Heard AI to create a short film that communicated the importance of Heard AI’s accessible voice AI technology. This helped Heard AI secure $5 million in their second round of funding.
